The CRUISING course provides 41 hours instruction, all onboard, on yachts starting with daysailers up to 31 ft. cruising boats. CRUISING includes the Daysailing course. It is for students with little or no experience whose objective is to sail at night and cruise boats along the coast on trips of 1 to 3 days duration in average sailing conditions. Course prepares you for the BHSC Basic Keelboat and Basic Cruising certification exams and the Club’s Pearson 26 Bronze membership.

DAYSAILING: The first 16 hours instruction are boat handling on our new Boston 27, a boat the Club developed from the Olympic Soling expressly for teaching. It provides the feedback essential for learning while offering our adult students seating comfort and more than enough foam flotation to make the boat unsinkable.

BASIC NAVIGATION: The next 8 hours are devoted to navigation on Boston Harbor on a Pearson 26, a small cruiser. Class includes a review of outboard motors, fueling, use of the marine head and VHF, and concludes with a 20 mile trip in the Outer Harbor reading marine charts, determining position, practice docking and anchoring at an island lunch stop.

COASTAL NAVIGATION CRUISE: This 10 hour Sunday cruise to Marblehead or Cohasset combines GPS and traditional dead reckoning navigation on the Albin 28. At the mooring the instructor will review the diesel and other shipboard equipment, demonstrate waypoints on the GPS chartplotter and set up courses on paper charts for the trip.

NIGHT SAILING: A 7 hour class 5-12 pm Friday on the Pearson 31 provides instruction in vessel lighting requirements, nighttime aids to navigation, orientation to the vessel and docking practice, then embarks on a 5 hour night sail in Boston Outer harbor, a uniquely good place to practice picking out navigation lights from land-based light clutter.

STUDENT MEMBERSHIP: CRUISING students enjoy 30 days Student Membership from the first onboard lesson to practice on the Boston 27, P26, Albin 28 and Pearson 31.
